In a future update, Alexa may use the voice of friends and family members who are no longer living.

Alexa would be able to simulate someone's voice after listening to their voice for less than a minute.

A video of the feature depicted a child who asked to have their grandmother read them a story, and Alexa affirmed before changing her voice.

And then Alexa starts telling the story in a tone of voice similar to the child’s deceased grandmother.

It's unclear when the feature will be rolled out to Alexa voice assistants and to what extent the development is proceeding.

According to an Amazon spokesperson, the feature isn't specifically intended for deceased family members.

This feature may not be visible to everyone right away.  As there are ethical questions about whether the voice of a deceased person can be kept on a device or on the company's servers for a long period.
